Cancel, the former Commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs and presently Executive Director of the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural Center in New York. Although Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States we have also developed (against much adversity) our own culture and it is incumbent upon us to protect it at all costs and to teach our children that we have a legacy to preserve. Pepsi Gives the Boot to "The Last Puerto Rican Indian"

"Tiempo" a local New York City newspaper published in its current edition (October 19, 2006) an article about "The Last Puerto Rican Indian" being dis-invited from the Pepsi Hispanic employees celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The article makes an accurate report on the issue covering both sides. Pepsi, however, is rying to cover up its mistake by claiming that we were dis-invited because publishers and authors weere not invited to the event. The following is our response: -------------------------------------- Bobby González was supposed to be reading from his latest work, “The Last Puerto Rican Indian”, a 96-page book of poetry at Pepsi world headquarters in Purchase, NY on Thursday, September 28, 2006. The Last Puerto Rican Indian - Marketing Strategy

Guerilla Marketing. We have employed a marketing strategy that I like to call "Guerilla Marketing" and it consists in agressively going out to our community and presenting what we have to sell to them, such as a book or t-shirts with original designs, etc. I use "guerilla marketing" as an agressive strategy to sell as many books a possible in the shortest period of time. I am bypassing the bookstores to sell the book. My approach is that the success of the book is directly tied to the amount of outreach and promotion that is carried out. And this strategy is working! It is different than the passive way of selling a book by way of the bookstores. Now, bookstores play a significant role in making books available to the public but when you are engaged in producing a book that does not cover a popular topic and that is produced on a shoestring budget then you have to take a different approach.
